Chapter 6

Chase

My entire body went numb, and my ears started to buzz. The word pregnant echoed in my mind. Memories of my mother crying on the floor while my father screamed at her for forgetting to do his laundry came roaring back. Cole, still a toddler at the time, had been whimpering nearby and quickly became the target of my father’s wrath.

Only a few years older, but old enough to understand what was happening, I’d thrown myself between them, determined to save my brother from whatever punishment the old man was doling out. Usually a backhand to the face, but he’d been known to use his belt; the buckle end, on occasion.

That night, he’d stopped just short of rearranging my nose, and instead, had taken me under his tutelage as one of his employees at the chop shop. It had been the worst and best day of my life. Both for the same reason: It was the first time my father had actually taken an interest in me. One that had ultimately gotten me shot at and almost killed.

“Chase?” Katrina asked. “Did you hear what I said?”

I glanced at her, not really seeing her at all and nodded. “Pregnant.”

“That’s right. And it’s yours, just in case there was any question. I haven’t been with anyone else.”

I jerked my head in her direction and growled, “It had damned well better me mine.”

She held up her hands in a whoa motion. “No need to get all alpha bear on me. I was just clarifying in case there was any confusion.”

“Confusion?” I stood and paced the small porch. “Yeah, I have confusion. How did this happen? We were careful. I remember—” He stopped talking abruptly, making it clear his memory had kicked in. “The last time.”

She nodded. “It must’ve been. I was going to take the Plan B pill, even stopped at the drug store to get it. Then when I finally got to my aunt’s house in Georgia, I just...couldn’t. I don’t know. It’s not like I was dying to have a child. In fact, at that moment it was the last thing I wanted. But when I thought about you, about our night together, the fact that you’re my mate, the idea of possibly ending something—someone—we’d created was out of the question.”

I heard what she’d said, but wasn’t ready to process any of it. “How long have you known?”

She bit down on her bottom lip as one lone tear rolled down her cheek. “Three weeks.”

“Three fucking weeks,” I said to myself. “Three weeks I’ve been damn near pining for you while you kept this from me?”

“I...” She’d opened her mouth, but no more words were coming.

“Forget it, Katrina,” I said angrily. “The best thing you could’ve done was take that pill.” Then I strode off the porch, down the steps, and straight to my truck, never once glancing back.

“You want to talk about it?” Cole asked after an hour of silence.

We were in the office, a rarity for both of us. Usually, we worked from home or out in the field.
